A mechanical energy analysis of gait initiation.

چکیده
The analysis of gait initiation (the transient state between standing and walking) is an important diagnostic tool to study pathologic gait and to evaluate prosthetic devices. While past studies have quantified mechanical energy of the body during steady-state gait, to date no one has computed the mechanical energy of the body during gait initiation. In this study, gait initiation in seven normal male subjects was studied using a mechanical energy analysis to compute total body energy. The data showed three separate states: quiet standing, gait initiation, and steady-state gait. During gait initiation, the trends in the energy data for the individual segments were similar to those seen during steady-state gait (and in Winter DA, Quanbury AO, Reimer GD. Analysis of instantaneous energy of normal gait. J Biochem 1976;9:253-257), but diminished in amplitude. However, these amplitudes increased to those seen in steady-state during the gait initiation event (GIE), with the greatest increase occurring in the second step due to the push-off of the foundation leg. The baseline level of mechanical energy was due to the potential energy of the individual segments, while the cyclic nature of the data was indicative of the kinetic energy of the particular leg in swing phase during that step. The data presented showed differences in energy trends during gait initiation from those of steady state, thereby demonstrating the importance of this event in the study of locomotion.

متن کاملInvestigation of Gait Initiation in Women With Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
Background: Walking impairment is one of the most reported symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis (MS). The documentation of gait impairments is important for indexing disease progression and rehabilitation in MS. By measuring and comparing relevant parameters based on the Center of Pressure (COP) patterns, this study aimed to characterize the execution of the gait task and to identify the relationship...
متن کاملPrediction of Crack Initiation Direction for Inclined Crack Under Biaxial Loading by Finite Element Method
This paper presents a simple method based on strain energy density criterion to study the crack initiation angle by finite element method under biaxial loading condition. The crack surface relative displacement method is used to eliminate the calculation of the stress intensity factors which are normally required. The analysis is performed using higher order four node quadrilateral element. The...
متن کاملNumerical Study of Blast Initiation of Detonation Using a Two Step Chemical Kinetics Model
The effect of chemical reactions on the blast initiation of detonation in gaseous media has been investigated in this paper. Analytical method is based on the numerical solution of onedimensional reactive Euler equations. So far, analyses on the blast initiation of detonation have modeled the combustion process as a one-step chemical reaction, which follows the Arrhenius rate law. Previous stud...
متن کاملMechanical energetic contributions from individual muscles and elastic prosthetic feet during symmetric unilateral transtibial amputee walking: a theoretical study.
Energy storage and return (ESAR) foot-ankle prostheses have been developed in an effort to improve gait performance in lower-limb amputees. However, little is known about their effectiveness in providing the body segment mechanical energetics normally provided by the ankle muscles. The objective of this theoretical study was to use muscle-actuated forward dynamics simulations of unilateral tran...
